The tourist town of Pingyao in the north of China is an ancient walled city that during the day is often filled to the brim with tourists all here to get a taste of this Ming and Qing dynasty treasure trove. But taking a wander in the very early morning you miss the crowds and get to experience the hustle and bustle of simple daily life in the beautiful historical surroundings.

These two old guys were having a bit of a chat next to a donkey cart loaded with coal. The scene for me had a real raw feel to it and the old guys had such character etched into their faces!

Pingyao is a very beautiful destination for the photographer looking to capture a bit of old world history and charm, but be warned that there are lots of tourists – which means you just have to get your timing and expectations right.

.
