This is a collection of images from the sleepy living relic of times gone by – Yangmei.  A place where art students and discerning tourists come, hoping to catch a glimpse into a bygone era where the treasures are being preserved in an olde world atmosphere.   Surrounded by river on 3 sides this seemingly lost ancient hamlet ensconced amongst lush fields of sugar cane and banana plantations just 30 kilometres from Nanning, capital of Guangxi province, China.

Sometimes you find the most wonderful things wandering!

That was definitely the case with these bridges, which we just came across on the side of a quiet rural road in Fuchuan County, Guangxi Province.

I love these wind and rain bridges, and it seems the more disheveled the better.   I am a little curious though as there wasn’t a river or stream anywhere to be seen.   I guess the landscape changes, or it could just be part of the many of hectares of floodplains and land reclaimed during Mao’s times for agricultural use.

Their decaying architectural beauty provides the perfect contrast to the surrounding lush green.

The old city of Pingyao is simply enchanting – well it certainly was when I visited there during 2001 and 2002.

Bursting with charm this age-old enclave’s intact ancient city wall is quite possibly the best in China and offers fantastic views across the old town, which is great for the contrast between the well-touristed and not-often-visited areas of town.

I have a few memories from Pingyao, one was being on the wall and watching as a farmer walked a small herd of sheep into the back streets of the old town, a fantastic photographic moment but as yet I haven’t come across the images amongst the many thousands I am currently wading through.

The other was the horse and donkey carts clip-clopping along the rustic streets.  I was easily engulfed with horse cart-mania every time I heard one coming, and often the old guys driving or leading them were just as photogenic.

The traditional architecture is fantastic and as with most Chinese towns the best time to be out and about with a camera was from 6am onwards, as this is the best time to catch a real glimpse of local life and miss the tourists.

The stunning dome and roof art inside this beautiful World Heritage site was one of those intoxicating subjects with an endless array of angles and detail to capture in one of Melbourne’s architectural icons.

The building was open as part of Melbourne’s open house 2011.

Decided to give the new Lens Baby Composer a bit of a run on the streets of Hong Kong!
